Illegal relocation of Carp
by Julius Klokow

MORE ARTICLES

It has come under the attention of SACS that Specimen Carp are being relocated from "wild lakes" to "smaller pods" in some parts of the country. There are various reasons for this practice that could for eg. be beneficial to the fish / an individual angler / group of anglers with access to a private lake and / or syndicates or the establishment thereof. SACS wishes to warn anglers that this practice is illegal if you don't have the necessary permit to do so.

As confirmed with the Regional Nature Conservation Office in Bloemfontein, a permit is issued by Nature Conservation to authorise the bearer thereof that he/she may relocate fish from one lake / pond / river to another. The relocation process is generally also supervised / inspected by an official from Nature Conservation. Carp may not be released into an open water system like a river but may be relocated to a closed system like a farm dam where the impact can be limited should it for eg. go over the dam wall during heavy rain or breakage of the dam wall.

SACS wishes to kindly request anglers to refrain from relocating carp or other fish illegally between lakes / ponds. This is a criminal offence and may result in a penalty of jail term and / or a fine if found guilty in a court of law.

You are welcome to contact SACS if a need is identified to relocate carp due to it being in trouble somewhere and we can try to assist in a legal way.
